In
Kala, there are preserved examples of 18th- and early 19th-century houses with
semi-circular fireplaces on the ground floor, external staircases, terraces,
and window openings with benches that rest on consoles. Traditional elements of
architecture are dominant in these houses. However, from the early 19th
century, Njivice started developing as an area where wealthy citizens built
their summer houses. The most prominent among them was Andrija Ljudevit Adamić,
a famous merchant from Rijeka.
