The
monument, which represents a bollard for mooring ships, is an impressive
memorial dedicated to Pope John Paul II. The form of the monument also
symbolises the Glagolitic letter I. It is located on the John Paul II Riva
waterfront in Omišalj. Pope Wojtyla began his third and final pastoral visit to
Croatia by landing at the airport in Omišalj and setting off from Omišalj
harbour on board the catamaran Judita for Rijeka. The author of the monument is
the renowned Croatian sculptor and medallist Damir Mataušić.
