The
remnants of the Church of St. Helen in the Valley (Sveta Jelena na Dolu), a
single-nave church with a semi-circular shrine, have undergone conservation to
prevent their further deterioration. The semi-calotte in the shrine has been
restored and covered with shingles.
The
church dates back to the 12th or 13th century and was first mentioned in the
testament of Vid Bozanić, in which on 6 October 1569 he endowed "the
chapel of St. Helen outside the castle on the path that leads to the Fort of St.
Mark". It was mentioned in documents of 1603 and 1685, after which the
building lost its function. However, a church consecrated to the same saint was
established on the Placa, the main square in Omišalj. The apsidal window
opening of the church features a fragment of a pluteus from an early medieval
altar screen from another, unknown sacral building.
