13. Loža

A public building in Omišalj whose history dates back to the Renaissance.

In the Renaissance period, the town loggia was located on the Placa square. Inside and in front of the loggia, local people used to trade, hold meetings, and choose their representatives in communal governing bodies in accordance with the autonomous powers which the Municipality of Omišalj, as a community of free commoners, had both under the rule of the Princes of Krk and the Republic of Venice. The loggia was the place where important decisions were made, such as the selection of those who had to serve on Venetian galleys, the backbone of the power of the Republic of Venice. The loggia was rebuilt in the early 20th century.
